Choosing the right federal university and knowing its correct admission portal can save a candidate weeks of stress during the JAMB admission season. Every year, thousands of applicants lose valuable time chasing fake portals or filling forms on the wrong websites, and some even lose money to scammers who set up lookalike pages.
This guide brings together the top 50 federal universities in Nigeria for the 2026/2027 academic session, along with their verified official admission portals, so you can apply with confidence and avoid the common pitfalls that trip up first time applicants.
Federal universities remain the first choice for most Nigerian students because of lower tuition fees, wide course offerings, national recognition and access to government scholarships and grants. Whether you scored high in the 2026 UTME or you are still preparing for a future sitting, this list will help you plan your applications early and correctly.
Why Federal Universities Are Still the Top Choice
Federal universities in Nigeria are owned and funded by the Federal Government and are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). They generally charge lower fees compared to private institutions because part of their running cost is subsidised by government funding through bodies like TETFund. This is one major reason applications into federal universities remain extremely competitive every admission cycle.
- Affordable tuition compared to private universities
- Wider range of accredited courses and faculties
- Stronger national and international recognition of certificates
- Access to government scholarships, bursaries and TETFund research support
- Established academic structures and experienced lecturers
General Admission Requirements for Federal Universities
Before applying to any federal university on this list, candidates should have these basic requirements ready. Specific departments may ask for more, so always confirm from the school’s official admission page.

- Five credits in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings
- The correct UTME subject combination for the intended course
- A score that meets or exceeds the university’s departmental cut off mark
- Completion of the school’s Post-UTME or screening exercise where applicable
- Candidates applying through Direct Entry need a minimum of two A-Level passes, an ND, NCE, HND or its equivalent

Admission into federal universities does not stop at the school portal alone. After Post-UTME screening, most universities upload their provisional admission lists to the JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) at efacility.jamb.gov.ng.
This is the official platform where you accept or reject any admission offer given to you. Always confirm your admission status on both the university portal and JAMB CAPS, since some schools update one before the other.
- Log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng with your JAMB registered email and password
- Click on Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS
- If admitted, accept the offer within the stated deadline to avoid losing your slot
- Print your admission letter and proceed to your school portal for registration and clearance
